PORTRAIT OF THE PSYCHOPATH AS A YOUNG WOMAN by Edward Lee & Elizabeth Steffen

She is utterly beautiful,
and utterly insane.

A novel from Edward Lee & Elizabeth Steffen.
A full-force, hardcore psycho thriller.
Unlike anything you’ve seen from Ed Lee before.

P s y c h o p a t h
She shackles them to the bed.
She glues their eyes closed.
She punctures their eardrums.
She sews their lips shut.

T o r t u r e s s
They can’t move. They can’t see or hear.
They can’t scream.
All they can do is feel.
And with her tools — her scalpels and needles,
her bonesaws and her knives –
She gives them a lot to feel…

“The novel that American Psycho should have been… brutal, break-neck, and very real. An astonishing, gruesome feminist thriller…”

- Andrew Harper, author of Bad Karma

TALES OF THE FALLEN: Book 1 by David G. Barnett

David G Barnett offers up the beginning of what will hopefully be a long series of novellas and shorts centered around the battle for heaven. These first three tales are fast-paced, funny, raunchy and poignant. Barnett’s world comes to life with horribly flawed characters that you will like or hate, but won’t forget, abominable creatures and visions of Heaven and Hell that will begin to pave the way for more tales to come.

Of Angels Fallen

They rescued him from the streets and with their help he has become the world’s greatest assassin. So much death, so much blood, but it all ends after this one final job. Just one more death and Mal will finally get what was promised him so many, many years ago.

Jonas White is a powerful man, an empire builder. He commands adoration and respect from everyone who meets him. He is a good man, does good things. But now he’s also a marked man. He knows destiny is banging on the door. What will happen when he opens it?

Two men fated to meet each other on one cataclysmic evening. An evening when secrets will be revealed, loyalties will be tested, old grudges settled and new ones made. This is just one stop along a long road. A road that leads back to where it all began so very long ago.

Daddy Demon’s Day Out

He wanted revenge for an atrocity committed so many years ago. Back when his world collapsed around him with a single knock on his door.

But that was then and this is now and revenge is at hand. Years of planning, years of blasphemous dealings and terrible actions have led to this moment. He has worked for decades to be able to summon the demon of revenge and now he’s ready. Tonight he will demand the demon grant his one wish and all this will finally be over.

But Travis Burnsfield will soon find out that the demon of revenge has other plans for the evening. Plans that involve Starbucks, cheese steaks and a trip to the infamous Painfreak where many creatures go, all with very different hungers. Some with hungers that can be sated by the sorrow of a tired old man who only wants revenge for something taken from him so very long ago.

Sleeper Angels Awaken

The old man hadn’t been here in… Well, he couldn’t really remember. But what he did know was that it had changed. Changed so much. His heart was heavy at seeing the destruction and knowing what it all meant. But he didn’t have time to mourn. No, he had to move on.

He had placed them here so long ago, but over time he grew careless and forgot to keep track of them. But the time has come for him to track them all down. Things had changed and now he needed their help. It was time to seek out the others and awaken them…awaken his army. He only hoped they wanted to be awakened and wanted to help him. It would take some time. But after all, time was all he had right now.

OPERATOR B by Edward Lee

Science fiction, Lee-style. This critically acclaimed novella involves a U.S. Air Force test pilot recruited for a very special mission: to fly an operational recovered UFO. Any test pilot’s dream, right? Wrong. Special disfiguring surgery is required for anyone human who wants to fly the craft. This expertly plotted novella proves to detractors that Lee can write in many arenas, not just horror, and doesn’t have to rely on the “gross-out” to keep readers enthralled. (Lee has implied that he may one day expand this project to novel-length, just as he hopes to expand his hard sci-fi TRIAGE novella 2202.) “OPERATOR “B” made the Preliminary Ballot for 1999 HWA Stoker Award for Best Novella. Little known fact: the working outline for this novella was a screenplay, which is also the case for his well-reviewed conspiracy/UFO novel THE STICKMEN.

SLITHER by Edward Lee (Lettered hardcover edition)

RETAIL IS $150. In METAL TRAYCASE!

SOMETHING SLITHERING…

The smoking sizzle rose as Leona hosed down the burning wall. Jesus! she thought. I got it!

But…

She looked around. Where was Howie?

“I found the hose!” he bellowed, running back around the corner. He held the long length in one hand. “Turn it o—” But then he stopped, scanned his eyes at the smoking ashes.

“Howie,” Leona said with the sickest feeling in her life churning in her belly. “That thing in your hand isn’t the hose…”

It hung limp until the moment she’d said that, almost as if it had sensed the trigger of Howie’s fear. His eyes snapped down…

Then the “hose” began to move…

Vaguely pink, glistening skin. About an inch thick. How long was it? It extended from his hand, behind him, its other end still on the other side of the shack. Howie tried to drop the grotesque thing but it was already too late for that. In the space of that synaptic second, the creature energized and wrapped around Howie’s upper torso—

Then Howie was dressed in the thing, wearing it like a corselet. His scream was severed when more of its length coiled about his neck. Howie fell over.

His eyes still registered images as his vision clouded, and then the thing’s head made itself plain: slightly tapered, less like a snake and more like a worm.

A pink hole dilated—a mouth opening?—then a thinner pink tube of something fleshy slipped out and—

“Howie!” Leona screamed.

—slithered down Howie’s throat.

“What’s a header?”

Fifteen years ago, Travis Clyde Tuckton asked that self-same question to his ancient grandfather, and the answer came in a rampage of twisted bloodlust, missing persons, and the most macabre and indescribable act of vengeance that human consciousness has ever devised…

Now, in those same desolate woods, amongst dilapidated shacks behind whose rickety doors no one dare look, something even worse has come to curse the land of simple folk, a jubilee of murderous perversity and sexual abomination too hideous to describe. Only the courage of Travis Tuckton could ever begin to set things back to rights but, lo, Travis and his grandfather are long dead….

Ah, but their relatives aren’t! And it will be these stout-hearted men who shall rise to the occasion of the most horrific revenge in the history of the backwoods — an eye for an eye, a head for a head! Not even unearthed graves, molested corpses, abducted tots, and an unspeakable human monstrosity can thwart the might of right. Join steadfast hayseeds Helton, Dumar, and Micky-Mack as they venture forth into a wretched mire of unadulterated horror, where the symbol of ultimate evil is not a psycho-killer, nor a demon, but the full-tilt rev of power tools screaming through the endless night…..

THE BITCHFIGHT by Michael Arnzen

Avg. Customer Rating:
[Rating:4/5]

With Bitchfight, Michael A. Arnzen has written another tale which is both horrific and poignant. The plot is just as compelling as the characters who propel the story. In the hands of a lesser writer, The Bitchfight could be absurd, but Arnzen proves his mastery of the subject matter, making the reader care about the “animals” as well as the vet forced to care for them. And the ending…well, you’ve got to read it.

DEMONICA AND THE DREAM HOUSE by Patrick Kill

Avg. Customer Rating:
[Rating:4.5/5]

Wow. I just read this little tale and enjoyed it very much, although now I feel like I need a shower. Patrick Kill (Shane Staley) has a knack for combining humor, horror, the bizarre, and depravity to make a nice little siction cocktail. This story is no exception. If you like both your horror and your sex hardcore, then this tale is for you. Highly recommended.

GROANING SHADOWS by Paul Finch

Avg. Customer Rating:
[Rating:4/5]

Groaning Shadows by Paul Finch is a nice collection of his longer work. Published by Gary Friar Press, this book features four novellas and one short story. All of the tales are well-written and nicely suspenseful, if somewhat skewed by their Brit flavor and language. Nevertheless, a well-produced offering which I highly recommend!

BLACK INK HORROR ISSUE #5

Avg. Customer Rating:
[Rating:5/5]

Wonderful digest style fiction and poetry magazine. Standouts include: Playing Dead, The Farmer’s Child, Surviving the Holidays, The Self Portrait, A Hand-Made Christmas, A Tale of Terror. While not all the stories are great, they are good, solid stories. Highly recommended.

THE CYESOLAGNIAC by Edward Lee

Avg. Customer Rating:
[Rating:5/5]

I received this yesterday and started reading almost immediately. I finished it today and have to say I really enjoyed it. While it has its visceral moments it isn’t over the top like Header. A great addition to Sideshow Press’s catalog. Gordon Heyton is a 3-dimensional character with assets and liabilities like the rest of us. Nice ending. Highly recommended.

KINGDOM OF SHADOWS by Greg F. Gifune

Avg. Customer Rating:
[Rating:5/5]

Kingdom of Shadows, Greg Gifune’s offering from Darkside Digital, is another fine novella from this amazing, prolific author! With a tip of the hat to the 1990′s movie, Jacob’s Ladder, Gifune crams a deep, involving tale of criminals, demons, and psychological experimentation into just 85 pages! Highly recommended!

reviewed by: William C. Rasmussen

This is my first shot of Gifune’s work. I liked the grittiness of the story, for sure. The previous reviewer mentioned Jacob’s Ladder, which is a good comparison. I will add that there were also elements (believe it or not) of Event Horizon. Obviously not sci-fi but the darkness was very comparable in my opinion. This is well worth the price so check it out. Now. Go on. Quit reading reviews and download this sucker! Go. Highly recommended.

reviewed by: Mark Webb

Also my first taste of Gifune and it was sweet indeed, I’ll definitely be back for more. Gifune’s a masterful writer, and the story unfolds in a way, going back and forth between past and present (or is it?) in a way that is really intriguing and keeps you reading on to find out just what is happening to Rooster. A masterful, satisfying read.

BOOK OF SOULS by Jack Ketchum

Avg. Customer Rating:
[Rating:3/5]

I think this is a neat chapbook here. I’ve been a fan of Ketchum for awhile and reading this brings you a little closer to him in a way. One thing that interests me, almost more than the stories themselves, is the inspiration and ideas behind the works of fiction. And with this chapbook you get to see a behind the scenes, in a way. You get to see a bit deeper into the author’s mind. So I enjoyed Books of Souls but I can see how this wouldn’t be just anyone’s “thing” for reading. But if you are a fan of Ketchum do yourself a favor and give this a shot. Oh, and Bloodletting does another amazing job with this chapbook, the cover alone looks just fantastic. Just wanted to throw that in there too.

Here’s what our customers had to say over the past few weeks…

THE FIRST HEADER by Edward Lee

This is a fun little read. At only 6 pages you can fly through it any time you want. This tale is the first told “header”. What’s a header, you may ask? Well…that’s something that only Edward Lee can tell the best. The story dates back to the Civil War days. It tells that the horrible actions of the Yankees to the Southerners do not go unpunished. Two men go out to do their own form of justice for what the North had done to their families. And there a “header” is born. And so is a tradition….if you’ve been wronged unjustifiably then there’s only one way to even up the score. The First Header is fun to read and at only $6 you should all grab one, or hell even 3. And be sure to watch out for Lee’s full length novel, Header 2 from Camelot Books, coming soon. AND be sure to pick up the film adaptation to Header too, out on DVD now.

PROFESSOR LaGUNGO’S DELIRIOUS DOWNLOAD OF DIGITAL DEVILTRY & DOOM
by Mark McLaughlin & Michael McCarty (Digital Chapbook)

This is among some of the most fun I’ve had reading digital. Even though there are only 2 stories in this chappie it’s hard to say which one stands out. They both truly are, dare I use the word, ‘delightful.’ Imagine if Douglas Adams had written “Needful Things” instead of Stephen King. This, I think, is what you’d get. Highly recommended.

TEXAS TERRORS by Steve Vernon (Digital Chapbook)

This is a wonderful little collection and would be a bargain at twice the price. In, “North of Bigfoot, Bound for Memphis” we see him adding a Bradbury-esque quality to the plot. In less capable hands this could be a mess but Vernon does very nicely. In, “Jumping Chollo Will Not Die” he really focuses on the weird. Think about a little movie from the ’50′s starring Steve McQueen as a teenager and you’ll get the picture. Finally, in, “Two Good Hands and a Hold-out,” he has combined 2 of my favorite genres, horror and westerns, to great effect. This is a great little collection. Highly recommended.

TASTE OF TENDERLOIN by Gene O’Neill

My first exposure to O’Neill and I’m definitely a fan now. The writing has a haunting, lyrical quality to it, and the stories are moving and beautiful, even when they are dark and sad. My only complaint was that there wasn’t a lot of variety, but this is a themed collection so that is what one would expect. I’ll definitely be seeking out more by O’Neill.

CYESOLAGNIAC by Edward Lee

Ed Lee’s novelette from Sideshow Press, The Cyesolagniac, is a clever, well-written tale about a successful businessman whose primary sexual obsession revolves around pregnant women. It’s told with unusual restraint by Lee, and is captivating thruout and up to its witty twist ending! I have the Lettered edition of this book, and the production values are great as usual from Tom Moran’s press. Highly recommended!

CRUEL SUMMER by Matt Venne

Matt Venne’s Cruel Summer is a nifty novella, a gruesome murder-mystery filled with fiction, nonfiction, nostalgia and melancholy. It’s a quick read, but Venne packs a lot of information and feeling into this short coming-of-age tale centered around a 12 year-old boy, his friends, his family and a brutal killer. Highly recommended!

THE LITTLE SISTERS OF ELURIA by Stephen King

This is another great production in the long history of Donald M Grant Publishers. It contains the revised version of the Gunsligner as well as a novella, “The Little Sisters of Eluria” which is related to the Dark Tower mythos. A gorgeous leather binding (with snake skin feel), and a matching slipcase. This edition has all new artwork by acclaimed artist Michael Whelan, and whats more, its signed and numbered by him. This book should be on the shelf of all Dark Tower and King collectors, or just plain old lovers of beautiful books!

J.F. GONZALEZ: SECRETS by J.F. Gonzalez

Got to read an advance of this one. It’s a nice exploration of paranoia and how quickly people can turn on each other when their secrets are exposed. Managed to throw in some twists and turns that were unexpected. I felt the pace was a little slow at the end then a little too fast in the middle, but overall a satisfying read.

reviewed by: Mark Gunnells

THE RISING: SELECTED SCENES FROM THE END OF THE WORLD by Brian Keene (Digital Edition)

I see that there are no reviews for this digital edition, presumably because everyone else was a lot smarter than me and got an actual book before they sold out. Anyway, as the description says, there are 32 stories in this collection. One for each successive day of The Rising. Settings are from all over the worls, but the bulk of them are set in the US. A perfect “fleshing out” of The Rising universe. Very highly recommended.

reviewed by: Mark Webb

THE AVIAN by Brian Knight: Book Three in the Black Ink Chapbook Series

Brian Knight’s little novelette from Sideshow Press, entitled, The Avian, is kind of a lackluster tale from this author. A young teen who feels alone, not a part of this world, grows stumps on his shoulders that slowly morph into wings. OK… But nothing is really explained during this short tale, which at times felt a little too ambiguous to me, a little too vague. Not bad, but Knight’s done better. Recommended.
