The Black Ink Chapbook Series is back!

THE BLACK INK CHAPBOOK SERIES IS BACK!

FIONA AND GRAMS by Gene O’Neill and THE REVEREND’S POWDER by Erik Williams now up for pre-order as a two-book set for one low price.

For those who were around for the first chapbook series, we’re doing things a little differently this time. Series 2 will consist of six books (Series 1 was four) and books will be released in two-book cycles. In keeping with the spirit of the first set, each pair will include a book by an established talent and one from a “new voice” in the genre.

The sets are as follows:

FIONA AND GRAMS by Gene O’Neill

THE REVEREND’S POWDER by Erik Williams

REVENGE FLICK! By James Newman

A FISTFUL OF ZOMBIES by David Greske

THE UNUSUAL EVENT OF A SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT BIG K’S TRUCK STOP AND FINE EATING EMPORIUM – A MONEY RUN TALE by Sam W. Anderson

THREESOME by Ray Garton

As the majority of books were purchased in sets last year, we’ll be putting the set up for pre-order first for a short period. Buying both books will save on shipping and the total cost of the books. It will also be the only way to guarantee matching numbers for future books in this series. The singles will go up to their regular price of $13 each when the books are in stock and ready to ship.

To give readers a little more flexibility insofar as which books they buy, we’re offering the hardcovers in sets of two instead of one set of six. This will allow for a more timely release of the hardcovers, and will allow discriminate readers more choice in which books to pick up.  Look for the first hardcover set to go up for pre-order in the coming weeks.

We’re also kicking it up a notch in terms of the hardcovers’ design. The printed trade hardcovers are being replaced by fabric with foil stamping. Not only will the books be more durable, but they should be a bit more classy as well.

For those of you who bought the Series I set, please include your number in the NOTES section of your order.

OUR SORT OF MONTHLY BLOG (well, maybe every other month…. or not)

srHello Horror Mall faithfuls! Well, here we are at another blog; and we are a bit embarrassed that our last blog was actually in March. We do apologize for this and are constantly amazed at how quickly time flies, and even more so the older we get. But, fear not, we do have a bunch of exciting news to share so sit back and enjoy the ride.

We just finished shipping out the copies of David Niall Wilson’s amazing novel, “Vintage Soul”.  If you have not bought one already, treat yourself today, you won’t be disappointed. CONGRATS to Walter J. Danenhower as he was the winner of the one-of-a-kind super leather bound edition with all kinds of extra goodies!

We are eagerly awaiting the copies of Nate Kenyon’s novel “Sparrow Rock” which should land on our doorstep on 6-24. We will begin shipping those next Friday. Sparrow Rock has been received with much critical acclaim and many people have said it is the best novel they have read this year. This beautiful 100 copy limited edition has art by the fantastic illustrator Zach McCain, and copies are running low. DO NOT MISS OUT! I firmly believe this novel will be a STOKER finalist for Best Novel.

If you have not heard, we have reprinted John R. Little’s gut-wrenching novel, “The Memory Tree”, which up until now has only been available as an expensive and scarce hardcover edition. Our copies have an amazing cover by John Urbancik, a new introduction by Ronald Kelly, and some other goodies to boot. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy. THESE ARE IN HAND NOW, and READY TO SHIP!

We are also waiting for delivery of Bruce Boston’s poetry collection Dark Matters. As you may know, Boston’s poetry seems to be a perennial fixture among the Stoker balloting, and this collection should be no different. This tasty trade paperback has some sweet art by the talented Daniele Serra. Pick one up.

We have some cool books on the horizon including a hardcover limited edition of James Roy Daley’s bloody tale titled “The Dead Parade”. If that wasn’t cool enough, the books are signed by JRD, and also EERIE VON (formerly of Danzig, Samhain, and photographer for The Misfits!) who supplied the cover art. We are also close to going to print with John Everson’s novel, “Siren”, with some cool art by the amazing Travis Anthony. And a little further down the line are “Deathflash” by Gene O’Neill, and “Little Things” by John R. Little. We are also doing a huge omnibus edition of Joe Nassise’ “Templar Chronicles”.

So, it is definitely a good time to GO TO THE MOON! Stay tuned for more. In the meantime, “Stay Thirsty my friends”

New Author Sections: David Jack Bell, Michael Louis Calvillo, John R. Little, & Gene O’Neill

Horror Mall has just finished a quarterly store owner’s meeting and one of the things discussed in every quarterly meeting is authors’ section nominations.  Each store owner has the power to nominate an author for his or her own section at Horror Mall and the nomination goes to the Horror Mall administration for review.

The criteria for granting an author a section are as follows:

  1. author sales at Horror Mall
  2. author support for Horror Mall
  3. author’s involvement with publishers affiliated with Horror Mall
  4. prolificness within the horror genre
  5. customer reviews & feedback on author’s body of work

I’m proud to announce the following 4 authors have received their own author categories at Horror Mall:

DAVID JACK BELL

David Jack Bell is the author of two novels from Delirium Books: The Condemned and The Girl In The Woods. He is an Assistant Professor of English at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

MICHAEL LOUIS CALVILLO

Michael Louis Calvillo is eighty percent blood & gristle, nineteen percent love, and one percent evil. He is the author of I Will Rise (a Stoker finalist for Superior Achievement in a First Novel), As Fate Would Have It (winner of three Black Quill awards), and the seriously screwed up short story collection, Blood & Gristle. Many more works—short stories, novellas, and novels—are festering on the near horizon. He has no intention of slowing down until the world is his. You have been warned.

JOHN R. LITTLE

John R. Little was born in London, Canada, and started writing short stories at the age of twelve. The stories he wrote at the time are not memorable.

His first novel, The Memory Tree, was published by Nocturne Press in 2007. It was nominated for the Bram Stoker award for best first novel. A novella, Placeholders, was then published by Necessary Evil Press. This book was nominated for the Black Quill award.

GENE O’NEILL

Gene O’Neill has written five novels, the most recent Not Fade Away, which will be released in a limited edition by BMB in 2011. His short and long fiction have been nominated three times as Stoker Award finalists. In 2010 his book from Apex Book Company, Taste Of Tenderloin won the Stoker for superior achievement in a collection. He is presently working on an expansion into a novel of his Stoker nominated novelette, The Confessions Of St. Zach.

Visit Author’s Section

Each of these authors now have their own mailing list through the Horror Mall Red Alert System. Please visit this page to select any of the above authors you’d like to add to your red alert list for notifications on.

The biggest perk to an author getting his or her own section at Horror Mall is that Horror Mall actively promotes and markets these authors’ new releases to its customer base and also outside of Horror Mall. Each author who has a category also has a database of sales activity and tracking to cross-promote his or her new titles to customers who have opted in to receive our mailings. Having an organization like Horror Mall pushing and marketing an author’s work is an extremely valuable asset in this market.

So please join me in welcoming David Jack Bell, Michael Louis Calvillo, John R. Little, and Gene O’Neill to the Horror Mall authors’ lists! Please help support them by buying their titles through Horror Mall, sign up for their red alert news lists, and be sure to leave your reviews of their work in the customer review sections at the storefronts.

Here’s what our customers had to say over the past few weeks…

THE FIRST HEADER by Edward Lee

This is a fun little read. At only 6 pages you can fly through it any time you want. This tale is the first told “header”. What’s a header, you may ask? Well…that’s something that only Edward Lee can tell the best. The story dates back to the Civil War days. It tells that the horrible actions of the Yankees to the Southerners do not go unpunished. Two men go out to do their own form of justice for what the North had done to their families. And there a “header” is born. And so is a tradition….if you’ve been wronged unjustifiably then there’s only one way to even up the score. The First Header is fun to read and at only $6 you should all grab one, or hell even 3. And be sure to watch out for Lee’s full length novel, Header 2 from Camelot Books, coming soon. AND be sure to pick up the film adaptation to Header too, out on DVD now.

PROFESSOR LaGUNGO’S DELIRIOUS DOWNLOAD OF DIGITAL DEVILTRY & DOOM
by Mark McLaughlin & Michael McCarty (Digital Chapbook)

This is among some of the most fun I’ve had reading digital. Even though there are only 2 stories in this chappie it’s hard to say which one stands out. They both truly are, dare I use the word, ‘delightful.’ Imagine if Douglas Adams had written “Needful Things” instead of Stephen King. This, I think, is what you’d get. Highly recommended.

TEXAS TERRORS by Steve Vernon (Digital Chapbook)

This is a wonderful little collection and would be a bargain at twice the price. In, “North of Bigfoot, Bound for Memphis” we see him adding a Bradbury-esque quality to the plot. In less capable hands this could be a mess but Vernon does very nicely. In, “Jumping Chollo Will Not Die” he really focuses on the weird. Think about a little movie from the ’50′s starring Steve McQueen as a teenager and you’ll get the picture. Finally, in, “Two Good Hands and a Hold-out,” he has combined 2 of my favorite genres, horror and westerns, to great effect. This is a great little collection. Highly recommended.

TASTE OF TENDERLOIN by Gene O’Neill

My first exposure to O’Neill and I’m definitely a fan now. The writing has a haunting, lyrical quality to it, and the stories are moving and beautiful, even when they are dark and sad. My only complaint was that there wasn’t a lot of variety, but this is a themed collection so that is what one would expect. I’ll definitely be seeking out more by O’Neill.

CYESOLAGNIAC by Edward Lee

Ed Lee’s novelette from Sideshow Press, The Cyesolagniac, is a clever, well-written tale about a successful businessman whose primary sexual obsession revolves around pregnant women. It’s told with unusual restraint by Lee, and is captivating thruout and up to its witty twist ending! I have the Lettered edition of this book, and the production values are great as usual from Tom Moran’s press. Highly recommended!

CRUEL SUMMER by Matt Venne

Matt Venne’s Cruel Summer is a nifty novella, a gruesome murder-mystery filled with fiction, nonfiction, nostalgia and melancholy. It’s a quick read, but Venne packs a lot of information and feeling into this short coming-of-age tale centered around a 12 year-old boy, his friends, his family and a brutal killer. Highly recommended!

THE LITTLE SISTERS OF ELURIA by Stephen King

This is another great production in the long history of Donald M Grant Publishers. It contains the revised version of the Gunsligner as well as a novella, “The Little Sisters of Eluria” which is related to the Dark Tower mythos. A gorgeous leather binding (with snake skin feel), and a matching slipcase. This edition has all new artwork by acclaimed artist Michael Whelan, and whats more, its signed and numbered by him. This book should be on the shelf of all Dark Tower and King collectors, or just plain old lovers of beautiful books!

J.F. GONZALEZ: SECRETS by J.F. Gonzalez

Got to read an advance of this one. It’s a nice exploration of paranoia and how quickly people can turn on each other when their secrets are exposed. Managed to throw in some twists and turns that were unexpected. I felt the pace was a little slow at the end then a little too fast in the middle, but overall a satisfying read.

THE RISING: SELECTED SCENES FROM THE END OF THE WORLD by Brian Keene (Digital Edition)

I see that there are no reviews for this digital edition, presumably because everyone else was a lot smarter than me and got an actual book before they sold out. Anyway, as the description says, there are 32 stories in this collection. One for each successive day of The Rising. Settings are from all over the worls, but the bulk of them are set in the US. A perfect “fleshing out” of The Rising universe. Very highly recommended.

THE AVIAN by Brian Knight: Book Three in the Black Ink Chapbook Series

Brian Knight’s little novelette from Sideshow Press, entitled, The Avian, is kind of a lackluster tale from this author. A young teen who feels alone, not a part of this world, grows stumps on his shoulders that slowly morph into wings. OK… But nothing is really explained during this short tale, which at times felt a little too ambiguous to me, a little too vague. Not bad, but Knight’s done better. Recommended.
