Sneak Peak At Altar 13 Editions of DEPRAVED And THE BELOVED

Coming September 2010…

Depraved by Bryan Smith

Jessica Sloan only wanted to buy a used car. Instead she got raped by Hoke, a musician-grifter and veteran of the Music Row session scene. Jessica Sloan’s military daddy taught her to be army tough. It’s no surprise her thoughts turn to vengeance rather than the dubious brand of “justice” the law might afford.  She abducts Hoke at gunpoint and drives him to a remote spot in the woods.  The plan?  Kill the worthless rapist.  It’s a twist of bad luck that the spot she’s picked for Hoke’s demise borders Hopkins Bend, a small backwoods community where they not only don’t take kindly to strangers, they eat them.  Occasional exceptions are made for beautiful women, who get pressed into service as dancers at the Sin Den, a strip club that’s a mecca for those in the know with a taste for the decadent.  The Kincher clan exists at the outskirts of all this, outcasts even amongst the Depraved.  Victims of an ages-old curse, they have mutated through the generations. The Kinchers’ destiny is entwined with those of Hoke and Jessica in ways none of them could guess at the outset of that long and bloody day.  It’s a fight to see which is stronger—Hopkins Bend and its web of depravity…or Jessica Sloan’s indomitable will to survive.

For God spared not the angels that sinned…

On May 21st, 2007, seven graduate students in Religious Studies set out from the University of Colorado in search of God. Armed with only their faith and the scriptures, they rented a small cluster of cabins on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains.

None of them were ever heard from again.

…but cast them down to hell…

On October 29th, 2009, a disarticulated femur is discovered in a mountain lion’s den. Forensic testing confirms that the bone belongs to one of the missing seven, triggering a massive search of the surrounding wilderness.

No other evidence is found.

…and delivered them into chains of darkness…

On November 13th, the families of the missing students rent the same cabins and attempt to recreate the final days of their loved ones in hopes of divining their fate. Only this time, thanks to an unusual bacterium isolated from the femur, they know where to look.

Nothing can prepare them for the truth.

…to be reserved unto judgment.

This is their story. The story of what they found, what they lost…and what Remains.

Delirium Quick Notes

There’s a number of things going on behind the scenes.  I’ve noticed for the first time in more than a year, that the small press horror market seems to be growing once again.  The demand for books is picking up slowly and hopefully the economy will begin to work again for small businesses and us everyday joes out there.  With this in mind, there’s a good chance that I’ll be moving up Michael McBride’s Innocents Lost from a fall release to a late spring release.  The cover art has been turned in by Zach MCain which I’ve posted here.

The new production of Delirium limiteds has been a big hit.  Overall, I’ve received major cheers from Delirium readers and collectors. Long After Dark by Greg F. Gifune has sold out in limited and lettered and now the digital has been released.  You can download it HERE.

Delirium 2009 slipcases (vol. 2) have all shipped as of today.  This completes the Delirium set for 2009.  I’ll be posting another slipcase for the 4 titles released this year around October.

The limited edition of Clickers 3 by J. F. Gonzalez & Brian Keene will begin shipping the first week of April.  This was a tough title to handle in design due to the fact that I wanted to both match the book with the Clickers series, but also match it with Delirium’s new vision of its volumes displayed in a yearly series. You’ll find that the dust jacket and foil stamp has been designed to look like the other two books in the Clickers series, but the cover material will match the rest of this year’s books in the Delirium series. Plus, there will be the new Delirium logo stamped on the back cover. The book turned out great, so I’m confident both sides will be pleased.

Preorder Clickers III

As of this first public announcement, the limited edition is more than half way sold out and only 5 copies of the lettered edition remain!

New Digital Releases 1/26/10 (Gifune, Wrath, Gonzalez & Wilson)

JUDAS GOAT by Greg F. Gifune

Who is the Judas Goat?

It had been twenty years since Lenny Cates had seen or heard from his old college flame Sheena.  Theirs had been a brief and tumultuous relationship that ended badly, so when Lenny is notified that Sheena has died in a freak accident and has left her entire estate to him, he feels compelled to investigate the last days leading to her untimely death.  As Lenny arrives in town to settle her affairs, he begins to dig deeper into Sheena’s life and learns her final days were cast in shadows of loneliness, depression and experiments in black magic.  Soon, Lenny will discover that Sheena’s death has awakened something insatiably demonic and old as mankind, something lying in wait and growing stronger in a quiet little town where the horrors of the past never truly die, pain is eternal, and nothing is as it seems.

Look closer…sometimes evil hides in plain sight.

THIS IS MY BLOOD by David Niall Wilson

First published in 1999, This is My Blood is David Niall Wilson’s first and most important novel. It is a retelling of the gospel from a very different perspective. When Jesus goes into the desert and is tempted by the devil, there is one temptation added. One of the fallen is raised as a woman to tempt him with the flesh. Instead, the woman, named Mary of Magdalene, falls in love with Jesus and his promise of returning her to Heaven.

Cursed to follow him and drink the blood of his followers, Mary walks a fine line between her desire to love and support the Christ, and her burning need to return to Heaven. This novel takes the world of faith, which was the world of men, and of the apostles, and shows it through the eyes of a fallen angel – one who has, in her own words, walked the roads of both Heaven, and Hell. She doesn’t believe there is a God…she knows.

Faithful to the storyline of the original gospels, only weaving in new things when there are gaps in the old, this is a novel of faith, redemption, and ultimate sacrifice.

Here’s what our customers had to say over the past few weeks…

THE FIRST HEADER by Edward Lee

This is a fun little read. At only 6 pages you can fly through it any time you want. This tale is the first told “header”. What’s a header, you may ask? Well…that’s something that only Edward Lee can tell the best. The story dates back to the Civil War days. It tells that the horrible actions of the Yankees to the Southerners do not go unpunished. Two men go out to do their own form of justice for what the North had done to their families. And there a “header” is born. And so is a tradition….if you’ve been wronged unjustifiably then there’s only one way to even up the score. The First Header is fun to read and at only $6 you should all grab one, or hell even 3. And be sure to watch out for Lee’s full length novel, Header 2 from Camelot Books, coming soon. AND be sure to pick up the film adaptation to Header too, out on DVD now.

PROFESSOR LaGUNGO’S DELIRIOUS DOWNLOAD OF DIGITAL DEVILTRY & DOOM
by Mark McLaughlin & Michael McCarty (Digital Chapbook)

This is among some of the most fun I’ve had reading digital. Even though there are only 2 stories in this chappie it’s hard to say which one stands out. They both truly are, dare I use the word, ‘delightful.’ Imagine if Douglas Adams had written “Needful Things” instead of Stephen King. This, I think, is what you’d get. Highly recommended.

TEXAS TERRORS by Steve Vernon (Digital Chapbook)

This is a wonderful little collection and would be a bargain at twice the price. In, “North of Bigfoot, Bound for Memphis” we see him adding a Bradbury-esque quality to the plot. In less capable hands this could be a mess but Vernon does very nicely. In, “Jumping Chollo Will Not Die” he really focuses on the weird. Think about a little movie from the ’50′s starring Steve McQueen as a teenager and you’ll get the picture. Finally, in, “Two Good Hands and a Hold-out,” he has combined 2 of my favorite genres, horror and westerns, to great effect. This is a great little collection. Highly recommended.

TASTE OF TENDERLOIN by Gene O’Neill

My first exposure to O’Neill and I’m definitely a fan now. The writing has a haunting, lyrical quality to it, and the stories are moving and beautiful, even when they are dark and sad. My only complaint was that there wasn’t a lot of variety, but this is a themed collection so that is what one would expect. I’ll definitely be seeking out more by O’Neill.

CYESOLAGNIAC by Edward Lee

Ed Lee’s novelette from Sideshow Press, The Cyesolagniac, is a clever, well-written tale about a successful businessman whose primary sexual obsession revolves around pregnant women. It’s told with unusual restraint by Lee, and is captivating thruout and up to its witty twist ending! I have the Lettered edition of this book, and the production values are great as usual from Tom Moran’s press. Highly recommended!

CRUEL SUMMER by Matt Venne

Matt Venne’s Cruel Summer is a nifty novella, a gruesome murder-mystery filled with fiction, nonfiction, nostalgia and melancholy. It’s a quick read, but Venne packs a lot of information and feeling into this short coming-of-age tale centered around a 12 year-old boy, his friends, his family and a brutal killer. Highly recommended!

THE LITTLE SISTERS OF ELURIA by Stephen King

This is another great production in the long history of Donald M Grant Publishers. It contains the revised version of the Gunsligner as well as a novella, “The Little Sisters of Eluria” which is related to the Dark Tower mythos. A gorgeous leather binding (with snake skin feel), and a matching slipcase. This edition has all new artwork by acclaimed artist Michael Whelan, and whats more, its signed and numbered by him. This book should be on the shelf of all Dark Tower and King collectors, or just plain old lovers of beautiful books!

J.F. GONZALEZ: SECRETS by J.F. Gonzalez

Got to read an advance of this one. It’s a nice exploration of paranoia and how quickly people can turn on each other when their secrets are exposed. Managed to throw in some twists and turns that were unexpected. I felt the pace was a little slow at the end then a little too fast in the middle, but overall a satisfying read.

THE RISING: SELECTED SCENES FROM THE END OF THE WORLD by Brian Keene (Digital Edition)

I see that there are no reviews for this digital edition, presumably because everyone else was a lot smarter than me and got an actual book before they sold out. Anyway, as the description says, there are 32 stories in this collection. One for each successive day of The Rising. Settings are from all over the worls, but the bulk of them are set in the US. A perfect “fleshing out” of The Rising universe. Very highly recommended.

THE AVIAN by Brian Knight: Book Three in the Black Ink Chapbook Series

Brian Knight’s little novelette from Sideshow Press, entitled, The Avian, is kind of a lackluster tale from this author. A young teen who feels alone, not a part of this world, grows stumps on his shoulders that slowly morph into wings. OK… But nothing is really explained during this short tale, which at times felt a little too ambiguous to me, a little too vague. Not bad, but Knight’s done better. Recommended.
