BAD MAGICK by Nate Southard & Steven Shrewsbury (Limited Edition)

New announcement from Cargo Cult Press!

With only 150 copies being produced this edition will go fast so order soon.

BAD MAGICK by Nate Southard & Steven Shrewsbury (Limited Edition)

In 1901, famed mystic Aleister Crowley passes through a barbaric land known as El Paso, Texas. There he meets a one-armed confederate and a Russian monk known as Rasputin.  Together, these outcasts stand witness to the terrible things men can do in the name of civilization, things normally locked behind closed doors or hidden deep in the shadows.

When a band of militant Jesuits arrives in search of the prayer shawl of Mary, El Paso’s barbarism is eclipsed by religious brutality, but when a white buffalo appears, only Crowley and his new companions stand between mankind and oblivion.

What do you get when you mix a shot of absinthe and a shot of Tennessee whiskey? That’d be BAD MAGICK, a tag-team novel by Steven Shrewsbury and Nate Southard. These two writers shake up a couple of mythic voices and slam them down hard. Which is another way of saying that the absinthe is Aleister Crowley, and the whiskey is a one-armed Civil War vet who’s also a walking arsenal, and together they make for one potent brew.”

Description

The Woman is the powerful story of the last survivor of a feral tribe of cannibals who have terrorized the east coast from Maine into Canada for years now.  Badly wounded in a battle with police, she takes refuge in a cave overlooking the sea.  Christopher Cleek is a slick, amoral — and unstable — country lawyer who, out hunting one day, sees her bathing in a stream.  Fascinated, he follows her to her cave.  Cleek has many dark secrets and to these he’ll add another.  He will capture her, lock in his fruit cellar, and tame her, civilize her.  To this end he’ll enlist his long-suffering wife Belle, his teenage son and daughter Brian and Peg, and even his little girl Darlin’, to aid him.  So the question becomes, who is more savage?  The hunter or the game?

The papers call it “The Suicide Virus.” The teenagers of Gethsemane, Ohio, are killing themselves at an alarming rate.

Steven Wrigley is trying to survive his senior year of high school, still reeling from the death of his mother and adjusting to life with his father. While sleeping, Steven writes names in a notebook– the names of dead teenagers before he can possibly know they’re dead. These messages fill him with dread, clues to some mystery he must try to unravel. Along the way, he meets a girl who becomes another kind of obsession: Elise Devon.

Elise’s secrets keep her distanced from everyone. She has a special place she calls the Obscura. She goes there when she is depressed or angry. The Obscura makes her feel like nothing she’s ever felt before. She soon realizes the Obscura may be partially to blame for the suicides. When she loses herself to the Obscura, she fears she also gives herself to something much darker, something much more powerful. Something calling itself the Sorrow King.

Who is the Sorrow King?

He is carved from wood and bone.

He smells like wax, dead leaves, and memories.

He travels by moonlight and drinks the sorrow of others.

And, drunk from this sorrow, he must always create more.

Can love exact vengeance on a monster made from madness, depression, and misery? Or will the Sorrow King bleed the town dry before satiating himself and moving on?
