Delirium Production Input: The Great Dust Jacket Debate

As I’m less than a week away from moving this year’s first Delirium title to the binding stage, I’m asking for some input from Delirium hardcover subscribers.

Would you like to see Delirium’s 2010 titles with or without dust jackets?

Leave me a note in the comments section below (if you’re reading this on the Horror Mall forums, please leave input on the blog comments section, not in the forums).  This isn’t a discussion, it’s a gathering of feedback from hardcover subscribers.

Please make sure you leave your real name and correct e-mail when posting comments.  And note that if this is your first comment on this blog, it will be held for moderation, but will appear once approved.

Comments from those that aren’t current hardcover subscribers will be deleted.

Why am I asking? It seems that although the hardcover subscription remains sold out, only 1/3 of the subscriptions are being housed as a set in the slipcase. I believe the new direction (no dust jackets) is most effective as a set of each year’s books housed together.

I’ll be taking feedback on this through the weekend before I make a final decision early next week.

So it’s a chance for your voice to make an impact on the future production of Delirium limiteds.

So let me know your thoughts and the reasons why…

I would definitely like to see a return to the slipcase with mylar protector. I liked the look of the 2009 series, but the slipcases had more impact and better showed the artwork.

I’m looking at my old style Delirium books now and they do look dated compared to other publishers. If DJ are to come back I think it would be great for a new style of DJ, for example a wrap around DJ so you get some artwork on the spine. (Strange Magic by Dark Regions Press looks very nice on the shelf).

    What do you think subscribers??

I prefer having the dust jackets on my books. I’ll echo some other comments posted here and say that I also prefer having the mylar sleeves on my books.

I buy books for the contents, so the dj’s are or are not an added bonus.

If dust jackets only add about $1.60 per book. Why then would it be necessary to go with the cheaper binding? To lower the cost to the subscriber?

Why go for the cheaper binding if the DJ are only adding $1.60

I like those attached bookcovers that PS Publishing uses for some of their titles. I think they print the cover art directly on the book somehow.

My vote is for without DJs.

    Great point. I completely agree.

    A question for a question:

Why spend the extra money on enhanced binding material to be covered up by a piece of paper?

    An answer to your question:

The $1.60 plus the fact of the problems occurring when someone receives a bent corner of a DJ and wants to return the book can add up to be more than the enhanced binding material per unit.

95% of the returns from Delirium titles have been because of damaged dust jackets incurred in transit, even with the best possible packaging.

If you read the Delirium blog at Horrorgy, I have posted by decision in the latest entry.

I prefer the dustjackets, I try my best to be careful and neat when I read, but I’ll admit it, I am a klutz, therefore I prefer dustjackets. I cover them with a mylar protector and then I only need to be careful with the inside of the book.
